BACKROADS
Backroads is a column dedicated to the road less traveled.
More and more highspeed conduits of point to point, departure to destination
highways are being expanded. These are often enlarged to contain growing
amounts of vehicular traffic, while providing for faster and less distracted
travel.
What some would call distractions, others of us call attractions.
And I don't mean "roadside attractions" only.
Though there definitely are those along our backroads. But often enough,
the backroad itself can be the main attraction.
Those of us who have learned that something momentuous is lost in main
road passage; and that the only thing gained from highspeed travel may
be nothing more than a mercurial notion that some time has been saved.(For
what?)
This column will provide glimpses along and of some of Floyd County's
backroads. Glimpses mostly in pictures and a handful of words.
In respect for they who live along them and for they who treasure and
appreciate them and their growing rarity, we will not divulge their exact
whereabouts.
Suffice it to say..in Floyd County..so far..so many of our roads are
backroads..so many of our roads are still..as yet..the road less traveled.

Driving down a gravel road...I see a..
CLOSER
Built
in the late 1800's, very few round barns are to be found in southwestern
Virginia; this one just off of a gravel road in the northwestern section
of Floyd County.
